The Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers to fill temporary jobs when qualified Canadians are not available. Depending on the program, workers can stay anywhere from one to three years. For many international workers looking for a job in Canada can be a difficult task and finding the write program confusing. There are multiple ways to entre the Canadian job market, but for those who are interested in gaining international job experience this may the right program.
Temporary Foreign Workers Categories
This program has two categories and seven programs. These two categories are Specialized applications and General applications. The following lists are the programs included in these categories.
Specialized applications
- Global Talent Stream: Hire uniquely-skilled talent or in-demand workers in select ICT or STEM jobs to scale up and grow your business.
- Academics: Hire an academic at a college, university or degree granting institution in Canada.
- Agriculture: Hire on-farm foreign workers for jobs in primary agriculture.
- Caregivers: Hire an in-home worker to care for children, seniors, or persons with medical needs.
- Positions in Quebec: foreign workers in the province of Quebec. (Not offered by Taraz Services).
General applications
- Hire a temporary foreign worker for a wide range of positions under the high or low wage streams.
General Basic Requirements
Compared to most programs, the general basic requirements to hire a foreign worker are relatively few. However, filing and navigating the paperwork involved in this process may be a difficult task.
First, each worker must have experience or education that fits their job description. If this experience fits, the employer may apply for an LMIA. Most employers need an LMIA before they can hire a temporary foreign worker. Before you start the hiring process, you must determine if you need an LMIA. An LMIA confirms there is a need for a temporary foreign worker and that no Canadians or permanent residents are available to do the job.
Recruitment
There are only a handful of agents in the province of British Columbia that posses an international recruitment license, most are not active. However, Taraz services happens to be one of those agencies. Although it is not 100% necessary to hire a recruiter, there is something you should know if you do,
If an employer in B.C. is using a recruiter to hire foreign workers under the federal Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program, the recruiter must be licensed. If employers use recruiters who are not licensed in B.C., the employer can be fined and/or have their registration to hire temporary foreign workers cancelled.

What are the benefits of hiring an international recruiter? First of all, immigration agencies can not reach out and hire foreign workers abroad. In the case of Taraz Services, we are both a licensed international recruiter and an immigration agency. This means we can both find you international talent abroad and help you apply for your LMIA; in most cases this is cheaper than going through two separate companies.
The second advantage comes when you are in an industry with high labour demand, such as in IT. According to a survey from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), over 39% of Canadian small and mid-sized businesses found it difficult to find qualified workers to meet labour shortages. Reaching outside of Canada for highly skilled workers allows companies to fill those position with long term employees. Internationally trained workers bring cultural richness to your workplace, giving you a distinct business advantage. They can provide new contacts and introduce you to fresh ways of working and problem solving. Increase the reach of your business.
