Family Sponsorship
Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada over the age of 18 can sponsor certain family members. There are 3 different types of family sponsorship; Canada Spousal Sponsorship, child, and parents-and-grandparents.
*Keep in mind that, every application is done on a case by case basis. Because of this, the required documents for your case may differ from those of other cases.

Canada Spousal Sponsorship
Many international couples struggle to find time to be together. Often this comes through working holidays or short term work permits. However, these are just temporary solutions. Permanent Residency can be difficult, and other programs tedious. Because of this, spousal sponsorship may be the preferable option if you are planning on moving to Canada for the long term. This application can be complicated for those new to the process. This is because each applicant must fill around of 9 forms (case specific), totaling around 54 pages.
What is Spousal Sponsorship
Spousal sponsorship provides all of the same privileges that are afforded to Canadian citizens. In addition, sponsorship includes access to healthcare and work within Canada.
Application process
This application can be complicated for those new to the process. This is because each applicant must fill around 9 forms (case-specific), totaling around 54 pages. Additionally, here are some of the forms included,
- application to sponsor
- financial evaluation (some cases)
- class of application
- generic application form for Canada
- country-specific requirements
- additional family information
- schedule A – background
These among other forms must be filled out. However, some forms are country and case-specific. Furthermore, the process may be subject to change depending on factors such as country of origin, the number of dependents and immigration status, etc. Although each application is different, the Canadian Spouse Visa processing time for both inland and out-land is on average of 12 months.
What’s next?
When it comes to spousal sponsorship, processing can be complicated. Each application requires proof that the relationship is valid and not one of convenience. In this case, working with an immigration agency is sometimes the best option.
You can apply for sponsoring your spouse if you are married, in a common-law relationship, or have a conjugal partner. There are two ways to do this:
-
- In Canada: A benefit of sponsoring a spouse from within Canada is that we can usually process a work visa for them while they are being sponsored.
- Out of Canada: Processing times are dependent on the visa office outside of Canada. The sponsor can not be on welfare or recently have been on welfare. If you have been sponsored or sponsored someone in the past there is a 5-year waiting period.
Although each application is different, the Canadian Spouse Visa processing time for both inland and out-land is on average of 12 months.
Sponsoring a Child
Sponsoring a your child in Canada is one of the easier processes when it comes to sponsorships. Although the process is similar, the requirements are fewer.
What are the criteria for sponsoring your child? You can sponsor your children and your partner’s children ( natural or adopted), as long as they are 22 years of age or younger.

Parents and Grandparents
This visa has a cap of 10,000 annual as of 2016. Please call us as early as September to ensure paperwork is ready for the following year.
Spousal sponsorship can be stressful for married couples. Based on our experience, newlyweds who are continents apart have the most difficult time with processing times. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to submit a completed application free of error. If an application is incomplete or not filled out correctly, your application will be returned resulting in a further 3-month delay.
There are some common pitfalls in these applications. For example, it is very important to provide original documentation when requested. Other than photos, the sponsor’s original employment letter and the principal applicant’s original police certificates must be submitted.
In addition, there are times that the principal applicant has dependents who are between the ages of 18-21. These dependents need to provide police certificates and proper medical examination documentation, whether they are accompanying the principal applicant or not. Keep in mind that although this is a requirement when submitting an application, it is not mentioned in government checklists or guides.
If you would like us to review your application before you submit it or to do your application from start to finish, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Requirements for family sponsorship can vary on a case-to-case basis.
