Canada’s Caregiver program is a program for individuals who want to migrate and work in Canada as caregivers. This includes in-home nannies and caretakers for the elderly or those with disabilities. This would provide a direct pathway to permanent residency. After just two years of experience with the LCP work permit, foreign nationals are able to apply for permanent residence. Caregivers who are already in Canada could also have the opportunity to apply for permanent residence through the recently announced creation of a permanent residence pathway for essential workers.
But what is the new accelerated application process?
IRCC is working to overcome the pandemic-related roadblocks that have interfered with processing applications from caregivers and their families by announcing a processing plan for 2021.

This new policy comes into effect on May 3rd, 2021.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the live-in caregiver program, applicants must:
- Have a valid work permit, or have applied to extend your work permit, or have applied to restore your status as a worker in Canada.
- Have work experience in Canada as either a Home Child Care provider or a Home Support Worker.
- Have at least 1 year of full-time work experience since November 30, 2014 which can be cumulative rather than continuous but cannot include work experience while a student.
- Have been working in a job that matches your NOC code’s listed duties.
- Have tested language skills equivalent to Canadian Languages Benchmark (CLB) 5 or NLCL (French language) 5 in all four areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Have a minimum Canadian High School Diploma or a foreign diploma, certificate, or credential that’s equivalent.
If you have completed your Canadian work experience, the Canadian government will finalize your permanent residency and that of your family members by December 31st 2021. This has a limit of 6000 caregivers, so it’s important to apply quickly. The government will also make at least 1,500 first-stage decisions on applications for the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilots by June 30, 2021.
