Permanent Residents Applying for Canadian Citizenship: Changes Regarding the Physical Presence Requirement
Under the new Canadian government, the physical presence requirement is changing back to what it was prior to the conservative government changes. This means that Permanent Residents looking to qualify for Citizenship need to be present for 60% of a shorter period of time (three of the last five years). Under the Conservative government the requirement stated that Permanent Residents must be in Canada for four out of the last six years 66%. This is one of the changes the Liberals are pushing for with Bill C-6 as a proposed amendment to the conservatives C-24. The new government is hoping for changes to be in effect as soon as Canada Day this year.
